Measures insulation resistance (IR) between plates
Detects dielectric breakdown or contamination
Verifies capacitor health in:
Power factor correction banks
HVDC systems
Pulse power applications
Standard | Application | Test Voltage |
---|---|---|
IEC 60871 | Shunt capacitors | 1.5-2.5 × rated V |
IEEE 18 | AC capacitors | DC test preferred |
MIL-C-62 | Military-grade | 3 × rated V |
Equipment:
5kV/10kV Megohmmeter (e.g., Megger MIT515)
Procedure:
Discharge capacitor fully (critical safety step!)
Apply DC test voltage (typically 1kV per μF, max 10kV)
Measure leakage current after 1 minute
Calculate IR:
IR=Leakage CurrentTest VoltageAcceptance Criteria:
Capacitor Type | Minimum IR |
---|---|
Film capacitors | >10,000 MΩ |
Electrolytic | >1,000 MΩ |
Power capacitors | >100 MΩ/μF |
Charge to rated DC voltage
Disconnect power
Measure voltage decay over time
Healthy cap: <10% drop in 10 mins
Faulty cap: Rapid voltage collapse
Uses LCR meter or HV bridge
Measures dielectric losses at operating frequency
Warning threshold: DF >0.5% for film capacitors
Model | Voltage Range | Features |
---|---|---|
Hipotronics 7500 | 0-40kV DC | Programmable ramp |
Megger DET24C | 0-12kV | Automatic discharge |
Iris Power Vanguard | 0-15kV | Tan delta + IR combo |
Safety First
Verify capacitor is discharged (use grounding stick)
Wear HV-rated gloves (>Class 00)
Connection
Connect HV lead to capacitor terminal
Ground case/frame (for wet capacitors)
Ramp Voltage
Increase voltage at 500V/sec to avoid surges
Leakage Measurement
Record current at 80% of rated voltage
Stabilization time: 60 sec
Discharge
Use bleeder resistor (10kΩ/kV)
Leakage Current | Condition |
---|---|
<1 μA | Excellent |
1-10 μA | Marginal |
>10 μA | Failed |
Failure Modes Detected:
Electrolyte drying (in electrolytics)
Partial discharge (in film caps)
Internal shorts
A) AC Capacitors
Test at 2 × rated Vrms for 60 sec
Max leakage: 0.1 mA per μF
B) Pulse Capacitors
Requires dV/dt testing
Check IR before/after pulse cycling
✔ Double discharge (initial + verify with voltmeter)
✔ Barricade work area during HV testing
✔ Two-person rule for >5kV tests
