1)Function of impulse voltage generator

Specialist technicians from substation equipment manufacturers point out that,Impulse voltage generator is a high voltage generating device that generates pulse waves. It is used to study the insulation performance of power equipment when it is subjected to atmospheric overvoltage and operating overvoltage. At the same time, the destructive effect of impulse voltage is not only determined by the amplitude, but also related to the steepness of the waveform, so it is also used to study the steep cutoff wave insulation performance of some power equipment.

Used for power supply of high-power electron beam, ion beam and laser.

2.     Relationship between rated voltage of impulse voltage generator and standard voltage of test product

The amplitude of operating overvoltage is directly related to the system and is several times the standard voltage. The amplitude of lightning overvoltage has no direct relationship with the system voltage, but due to the insulation level of the line, ground resistance, performance of protection equipment and other reasons, the amplitude of lightning waves that may appear will increase with the increase of system voltage.

3. Principle of impulse voltage generator

Impulse voltage generators usually use Marx circuits, as shown in the figure. In the figure, C is the stage capacitor, which is connected in parallel by the charging resistor R and charged to V through the rectifier circuit T-D-r. At this time, because the protection resistor r is generally about 10 times larger than R, it not only protects the rectifier equipment, but also ensures that the charging of each stage capacitor is relatively uniform. In the first stage, g0 is the ignition ball gap, which is started by the ignition pulse; in the other stages, g is the intermediate ball gap, which is adjusted to act one by one after g0 starts. These ball gaps act as control switches in the circuit. When they are all activated, all stage capacitors C are connected in series through the wave head resistors Rf of each stage and charge the load capacitor C0. At this time, the total capacitance after series connection is C/n, and the total voltage is nV. n is the number of stages of the generator circuit. Since C0 is small, it will be fully charged quickly, and then it will be discharged through the wave tail resistors Rt of each stage together with the stage capacitor C. In this way, a very high voltage short-term pulse waveform impulse voltage is formed on the load capacitor C0. During this short period, the charging resistor R is much larger than Rf and Rt, so they act as isolation resistors between each level. The impulse voltage generator uses multi-stage capacitors to charge in parallel and discharge in series to generate the required voltage. Its waveform can be adjusted by changing the resistance of Rf and Rt, the amplitude is adjusted by the charging voltage V, and the polarity can be changed by switching the two poles of the silicon stack D.
